Slice of life from Las Vegas, circa 1967
A former Las Vegas school administrator told a semi-interesting story to a newspaper in Massachusetts. The Hughes connection is slight but there's no reason to doubt its veracity. Check it out here.

Obviously there is no way to disprove this, but if there were I would bet big bucks that this is a fabricated story. Hughes signed his name so infrequently that it was a big deal when he did. If he wrote a letter (this guy didn't say whether it was typed or handwritten - and was it on Hughes' personal stationery, etc.) we in operations would have known about it because someone had to get the address, etc. I simply do not believe it. Hughes was a man of layers. I have come to expect the unexpected of him and have come to admire his tenacity in the face of his internal obsessions.
Crawling out of his self made excile to confront a crooked congress in front of the nation is in my opinion one of the bravest acts I have ever heard of. Right up there with Homer's legends.
Considering the damages to his physical and mental being by the car and plane crashes and made unendurable by the manipulators who sought to control his life and fortune. I have heard literally dozens of stories around LV and other towns and highly doubt all of them are lying and only one man is telling the truth! Of course the manipulators of history will bend ever effort to surpress any other version than a deprendent crazy man suquestered in his room. I guess he asked Romaine for premission to call congress and Pan Am a bunch of crooks. In my humble opinion, he should have been looking closer for crooks in Romaine! Just my opinion though and those are like rears, every body has one and they all stink, (some more than others).
I have probably heard more rumors than Anonymous has - but I know how things were done, and I know how Hughes operated, and I can detect flaws. If this guy really received a letter from Hughes, it would have been BIG news and he would have likely had it in the papers (he was, after all, a fairly high bureaucrat, and he knew of all the local publicity about Hughes, so he would know that he had a trophy if he received a personal letter. I would enjoy the opportunity to cross-examine him about this. It wouldn't take long to find the huge holes in his story and show this to be as fictitious as most of the other stories people make up. Sounds like the idiots with IQ tests trying to say, "This is the way the brain operates"!
Anyone who has REALLY researched the brain knows it an expotential variable of infinate possiblities that makes any statement of "understanding" instantly false! People and their lives are virtually the same! The only real constant is that there is none! Predicting human behavior on "how it was done" is assine in the highest degree and asks for a level of credulity that even the Brooklyn bridge sellers (yes I've talked to them, lol) would be hard pressed to ask for! lol
Paul: I understand your desire to question every Hughes story but why would this one be subject to the same narrow scrutiny as others? All the guy says is that he was talking about something on TV and got a letter from Hughes commenting on the show. We know Hughes was watching a lot of TV during this time. He even owned a TV station and commented to his employees about what was and wasn't shown on the channel. We also know that Hughes was in a writing habit at this time, handwriting memos to Maheu and others. I hardly think it's out of the realm of possibility that he penned a quick note to this guy, or that he instructed somebody within his close group to do so on his behalf. Protecting Hughes from ugly rumors is one thing, but questioning the veracity of some harmless retired school district administrator seems a bit severe.
Geoff:
Ever enter your mind that maybe it not HOWARD that is being protected?? The bent here is to forstall any assertion that does not have the stamp of approval of the Mormons or Romaine St (same thing). Like I told you earlier, there is still more to be written on Howard than has already been written. Once these boys get their DNA tests done, I suspect serveral books will be in the offing.
Incidentally, a hit squad tried to murder my wife an daughter, (again) 3 weeks ago. If my research isn't shaking someone's cages, then WHY??? I think Mr. Winn knows EXACTLY who I am and what I'm tring to accomplish! Of course as I said earlier, that's just my opinion and with all the cavaets that go with that! lol
