Margulis dead at 77; services set

The Las Vegas Review-Journal's John L. Smith wrote a wonderful column today about well-known Hughes aide Gordon Margulis, who died Wednesday. It's here.

Services are set for 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 2300 Sunridge Heights Parkway in Henderson, Nevada.

Interesting side light is how many of those with personal knowledge of the Hughes secrets are dieing of cancer. Jean Peters died of cancer in 2000 in Carlsbad, CA. She had been fighting it for a number of years.

She was by most accounts a pretty sane woman who did not like the fast life, stayed on set and ate with the crew, and never got an inflated ego. Her only weakness seems to have been a deep desire to have loving people around her. Which is not a bad flaw to have, if it is in fact one. She craved human to human interaction and the craziness around the Las Vegas scene made that impossible, even with the Spring Ranch provision.

According to family, at the Hughes spit, "she had come to the point that she just wanted, out." She did what was necessary to get out of the grinder. Again, a sane decision, it's a pity Hughes couldn't turn the mess over to managers and compose his life in a quieter setting. Perhaps the hardest thing for obsessive compulsive people, though, is just to let go!
